Dyslexia and Young People’s Mental Health:
The Hidden Struggles and How you can Help
Featured in youthwise Magazine
We’re thrilled to share that our founder and director, Dr. Shae Wissell, has been featured in the latest edition of Youthwise Magazine, discussing a topic close to our hearts: Dyslexia and Young People’s Mental Health: The Hidden Struggles and How to Help.
For many young people, living with dyslexia can be an isolating and confusing experience. While much attention is placed on reading and academic achievement, what often goes unnoticed are the emotional and psychological tolls that can accompany undiagnosed or unsupported dyslexia—feelings of failure, anxiety, low self-esteem, and disconnection.
In the article, Dr. Wissell draws from both her personal experience and research to explore the deeper mental health impacts of dyslexia. She highlights how delayed identification, stigma, and a lack of inclusive support in schools and society contribute to mental health challenges that too often go unaddressed.
Importantly, the article also offers hope and practical guidance. It shares actionable ways parents, educators, and community leaders can better support young people with dyslexia—by fostering environments that affirm neurodiversity, providing access to appropriate accommodations, encouraging self-advocacy, and creating space for young people to feel seen, heard, and supported.
We’re proud to be part of this conversation and to continue advocating for better mental health outcomes for neurodivergent youth.
