Understanding autism in young people and adults

ADHD and Autism in women blog by Laura Fuerst

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person communicates, processes information, experiences their environment, and interacts with others. While many people associate autism with childhood, it’s important to understand that autism is lifelong, and many adults are only formally identified later in life.

At re:think dyslexia, we work with autistic adults to support self-understanding, workplace inclusion, mental health, and empowerment. We recognise that each autistic person is unique, and we honour individual differences and lived experience.

Understanding Autism in Adulthood

For many adults, growing up without a diagnosis meant navigating school, work, and relationships without the support or language to describe their experiences. This can lead to

feelings of being misunderstood, exhaustion from masking or camouflaging traits, and challenges with mental health or self-esteem.

Being autistic might involve:

  • A preference for routine, structure, and predictability

  • Sensory sensitivities (e.g. to noise, light, texture)

  • Deep focus or passion for specific interests

  • Unique communication styles, such as a preference for clarity, directness, or written communication

  • Needing more time to process verbal instructions or social cues

Autism is not a deficit—it is a different way of experiencing and interpreting the world. When workplaces, services, and communities are designed to accommodate neurodivergent needs, autistic adults thrive.

How We Can Help

Our team offers a range of supports designed with and for autistic adults:

  • One-on-one coaching to support executive function, communication, and workplace success

  • Mental health support from clinicians who understand the autistic experience

  • Workplace training for managers and teams on inclusive practices and reasonable adjustments

  • JobAccess-funded services that help autistic employees access free supports

  • Peer networks and community to reduce isolation and increase connection

  • NDIS Services we deliver speech pathology services for young people and adults.

Late Diagnosis and Self-Discovery

Receiving an autism diagnosis in adulthood can be a transformative experience. It can help make sense of a lifetime of experiences and unlock new pathways for self-compassion, connection, and tailored support.

We support adults at all stages, whether you’re exploring a possible diagnosis, recently identified, or seeking to better understand your neurodivergent identity.
